With the vast infrastructure spends planned and underway in the SADC region, there is a unique opportunity to ‘green’ the production processes of industries as well we the transport sector as they are upgraded, replaced and renewed. A review of the motor vehicle industry highlights the widespread use of older model cars with high emissions outlets. Many of these vehicles are off-loaded into SADC developing economies and provide cheap solutions for citizens who require basic transport at lowest possible prices. Mass transport systems in most cases are similarly degraded and outdated.
